The True Cost: Top 5 Sustainable Fashion Documentaries RN!

"There is a joke in China that you can tell the 'it' color of the season by looking at the color of the rivers."

Orsola de Castro

Sustainable fashion has become a hot topic in recent years as more people are starting to question the environmental and ethical implications of fast fashion. People are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint and make more sustainable choices when it comes to clothing. Even I had to re-educate myself and my favourite way to do that is to watch documentaries so here are some of my top sustainable fashion documentaries to watch in the UK right now.

  1. "The True Cost" - Directed by Andrew Morgan, this eye-opening documentary explores the true cost of fast fashion. It takes viewers on a journey across the world, exposing the harsh realities of clothing production and its effects on people and the planet. This film encourages viewers to think twice about where their clothes come from and encourages them to support more ethical and sustainable fashion brands.

  2. "RiverBlue" - Directed by David McIlvride and Roger Williams, "RiverBlue" delves into the environmental impact of the fashion industry on our water resources. It highlights the toxic chemicals released by clothing manufacturers, which end up in rivers and oceans, polluting water sources and harming wildlife. This eye-opening documentary shows the urgent need for sustainable and responsible fashion practices.

  3. “Fashion Reimagined” - This documentary is about one of my favourite brands, Mother of Pearl, and follows Amy Pooney’s painstaking effort to produce clothes that do no harm. However as a sewer myself I have to say, this is pure textile porn. I can’t think of anything more pleasurable than watching heavy machinery extrude scoured fibres, weave yarn into bolts of jacquard or use lasers to create whiskering on denim cloth.

  4. "The Next Black" - This documentary by AEG takes viewers behind the scenes of the fashion industry to shed light on the future of sustainable fashion. It explores innovative technologies and approaches being implemented by designers and brands to create a more sustainable and circular fashion system. "The Next Black" provides hope and inspiration for a more eco-conscious future for the fashion industry.

  5. "Fashion's Dirty Secrets" - This investigative documentary by Stacey Dooley confronts the environmental impact of the fashion industry head-on. It explores the vast amounts of waste generated by the fashion industry, the excessive water consumption, and the pollution caused by clothing production. "Fashion's Dirty Secrets" emphasizes the urgent need for change within the industry and encourages viewers to take action.
